ESA´s Earth Explorer CryoSat mission, whose rebuilt spacecraft, CryoSat-2, was launched on 8 April 2010, is dedicated to precise monitoring of the changes in the thickness of marine ice floating in the polar oceans and variations in the thickness of the vast ice sheets overlying Greenland and Antarctica, as well as of continental glaciers. The six-month Commissioning phase has been devoted to system optimisation and initial validation of data products, supported by scientists belonging to the Calibration, Validation and Retrieval Team (CVRT) and from Project expert teams. The Commissioning Phase formally ended on 22 November 2010. Inevitably, some of the data had a few shortcomings since full validation is seasonally dependent and could not be completed within the Commissioning Phase. This Workshop, held just when the data release was announced to the general users, was a unique opportunity to provide first-hand information to a user forum to discuss all topics associated with exploitation, scientific research and application of the CryoSat mission data products.

The Workshop environment offered an ideal opportunity to liaise with ESA and to allow for scientific exchange with colleagues around the presentation of the technical, validation, exploitation and programmatic status of the CryoSat Mission organised within the following thematic sessions:

• CryoSat Mission Overview and Data Processing Status
• Calibration and validation results
• Data Processing, Product Quality and Outlook for Improvement
• Exploitation of CryoSat data
• Tools available to Pis
• Synergies with programmes from other Space Agencies

The CryoSat Altimetry data are expected to have an impact not only in its dedicated mission objectives regarding the changing ice fields but also in oceanography, hydrology, geodesy, and climate change research.
